Did You Know?

Never close your cold fireplace doors on a hot fire!

Any extreme temperature change can shock your tempered glass.  Not allowing the glass enough expansion time the glass will break.  We do not recommend making burning with the glass doors shut.   Once the fire is burnt down to small flames, or is in a smoldering state, we recommend you start shutting the doors a little at a time in 10-15 minute segments to allow the glass expansion time.  Not doing so could cause a dangerous situation.

If you are getting a pungent smell from your fireplace,
a good place to start is asking yourself
When was the last time the chimney was cleaned and inspected.
Until you sweep arrives, you can always place fireplace
deoderant inside the fireplace. This will help absorb a good
deal of the order. (However remember this is not a cure for the
source of the oder.)

* Safety Tip For Cooking In Cast Iron.

Please be sure that the cast iron item was
actually meant to be cooked in!
It is best to make sure you purchase
your cast iron cooking utensils at a specialty cook shop,
or in with the cooking supplies
where you are purchasing from. It is important to make sure they do not say
for humidifier use only! cast iron humidifier pots etc.
Usually have been painted and are dangerous to cook in.
See below of hints on how to care
your cast iron cookware.

* For safety purposes,it is always best to let ashes and
coals cool down before removing them from your fireplace!
Store your ash can on a non-combustible surface and away
from any flammable materials.

Is your fireplace smoke coming back in your home?

The first place to start is checking the leg height,
of your fireplace grate.  If your grate legs are 3" or less
you may want to raise the height with a brick under each
leg to see if a grate with a taller leg may resolve your issue.

If that didn't resolve the issue feel free to give us a call
for other possible solutions!

My fireplace smells what should I do?

If you are getting a pungent smell from your fireplace.
Ask yourself when you had the chimney cleaned and inspected last?

Some things you can check before calling a chimney sweep

  1. Try Cleaning the ash out of your fireplace
(Do this when ash is cold only!
  2. If you have an ash dump clean out in the basement,
    clean that out also.
  3. Is your firebox damp or wet inside?
This could be caused by loose flashing
around the base of the chimney at rooftop level
or your chimney needing to be resealed.

If you are still having odor issues, you can always purchase
Fireplace Deodorant to help with the smell
while waiting on your chimney sweep to investigate the issue.
(However remember this is not a cure for the
source of the oder.)
Cost of Deodorant is around $8.00 per bottle.

What are the down falls of painting the brick on a fireplace?

Painting the exterior brick of your fireplace might seem like a great option to spruce up the look of your fireplace.  However, should you paint it & not like it, or make a mistake there is only one real way to remove it.  That is to sandblast it. This can become a costly & messy process.

Firebacks explained:

First a fireback helps protect you back firewall brick and mortar in the general burn area from drying and cracking from extensive use in wood burning fireplaces.  Second, the heat the area would normally absorb is pushed back into the firebox, essentially providing more heat. It is always best to repair any cracks in the brick and/or mortar before installing your fireback.

What the heck is a Cape Cod Fire Liter Pot?
Cape Cod Fire Liter Posts were once the most use source of lighting fireplace fires.
They were most often used in large cooking fireplaces long ago. About 1" of kerosene was poured into
the pot allowing for the soapstone on the end of the rod to absorb the fuel. The stone was then lit and
placed into the fireplace between the logs, until the logs caught fire. Then was immediately removed!
